Welcome to my blog. My name is Cynthia Allen, and I am a longarm quilter. My grandkids call me "Gran"...thus GranDesigns Quilts became the name of my machine quilting business.
It seems that I have sewed for most of my life. I learned most of my sewing skills from my mother, who is a very talented quilter. When I was in college, I made model garments for a retail chain fabric store. I've made wedding dresses, prom dresses, kids' clothes, window treatments, toys, purses, tote bags, and the list goes on.
About 6 years ago, I began making pieced quilt tops. But I was more fascinated by machine quilting, and I wanted to be able to complete the quilt tops that I made by quilting them on a machine. I worked with machine quilting on my domestic sewing machine...then on a Juki TL98E on a Grace Frame...then on a Tin Lizzie 18LS for 3 years...and now with my new APQS Millennium!!
Over the past 4 years I have worked really hard at improving my machine quilting skills. I have progressed to doing mostly free-hand designs. My mother makes lots of hand appliqued quilt tops, and I machine quilt those for her. As a result, I have developed greater skill in doing free hand background filler patterns. I try to include photos of my work with my blog posts.
In my non-quilting life, I am a retired teacher. I now do Instructional Technology Consulting work on a part-time basis.
